Magical green spaces: Walworth Garden

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

One of the things I really love about London is just how many green spaces are to be found across this huge metropolis.

Sometimes I visit green spaces I've heard about from friends or online. Quite often, though, I find myself stumbling upon them by chance as I ramble around. I have never lost my excitable tourist eyes from arriving in London from the North East all those years ago.

During the various coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, I walked every day in my local area. The streets were so quiet, and nature was blooming and blossoming everywhere, sucking in the suddenly cleaner air above the capital.

During that time, I discovered spaces and places I had never seen before.

One such gem was Walworth Garden. Tucked away to the west of the busy Walworth Road thoroughfare, it's a truly magical place.

'A charity dedicated to knowledge and nurture', Walworth Garden provides a comprehensive range of services:

  • Garden centre

  • Education

  • Social and therapeutic horticulture

  • Plant centre

In 2021 I had the good fortune to attend a food growing course at the garden, It was so insightful and provided excellent hands-on learning in an impressive food growing environment:

I was able to use a lot of the learnings to begin developing the brand new little vegetable patch I had taken on in our community garden:

I've also recently been on Tanya Moulding's wonderful practical botanical perfumery course at the garden. Having an aromatherapy and natural perfurmery background, I thoroughly enjoyed this weekend of exploring the origins of perfumery, blending, dilutions and creating our own individual perfumes:

During the lunch breaks I was able to enjoy the beauty of the garden which was bathed in the January sunshine:
