When I was little I suffered quite badly from cold feet. This went on into adulthood, until I started learning T'ai Chi and having acupuncture sessions. These days my toesies only protest when the weather starts to get chilly. During my mindfulness session yesterday I noticed my feet feeling a bit cold. The first couple of lines of a new poem suddenly popped into my head and I wrote the rest of it a bit later that day.
Frozen toesies
As a child in the North
I would often go forth
To our school down the road
In the cold and the snow
With my brother in tow. (No pun intended)
Oh my toes
How they froze!
Feeling alive
At the age of just five
Cos your toes are so froze…
Now that is not fun.
Back home at our flat
I would take off my hat
And my coat
And my gloves
And my shoes.
But my toes
In the throes
Of an icy attack
Were the ultimate form of the blues.
My tears would run free
As I sat on the knee
Of my mum
Who would try to defrost
My poor toes (oh so froze!),
In the fear they’d be lost
To that curse of the wain…
The dreaded CHILBLAIN.
